RIP Aunt Iola - Iola Beryle Curran (Stafford)

CURRAN, Iola Beryle (Stafford)

Much loved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, aunt, daughter and friend to many, Iola passed away in her 89th year, Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Hamilton General Hospital, the same Hospital where she completed her nursing training with the Class of \'45.

Iola was predeceased by her husband John Curran (1985), her son Gary (1991), and her parents Neta Stafford (Watterworth) and Harvey Stafford. She will be sadly missed by her sister and lifelong friend Ilene Ford (Stafford, predeceased by husband Jack Ford) (St. Thomas), sons Dave Curran (Toronto) and Steve Curran (and wife Claudette, of Vancouver), grandson Shane Curran, nieces Donna Butcher (Ford, St. Thomas), and Janice Hurst (Ford, London), and their families, surviving sister in law Norma Curran (Burlington), surviving brother in law Archie Curran (Oakville), Iola\'s St. Thomas cousins, many nieces and nephews, and her long time friends and nursing classmates.

Iola was born in St. Thomas, Ontario in 1923 and moved to Hamilton to pursue her nursing training in 1943. She met her husband Jack on his return from England following his service in the R.C.A.F., and they married in Port Stanley, Ontario in 1947. Gary was their first son, followed by Dave and Steve, and they settled in Dundas where Iola lived for the rest of her life. Their home on Wilmar Court remained a welcoming constant until recent years. Iola had a warm sense of humour and connected with people around her, throughout her life. She was active in the Dundas community with the Home and School Association, and founded the first library at Yorkview School. She was a longtime fan and driver to numerous school and sporting events for her sons. Iola worked for many years with the Hamilton Nurses Registry and later in life enjoyed world travel.

Friends will be received by the family on Monday, February 13th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, Ontario, where a Service and reception will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 2 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Orillia, Ontario Canada

Family Tree

My name is Joy Ella Marie Curran. I reside in Orillia, Ontario Canada. I am trying to locate information on my mother's father John Stanley Curran. His DOB is November 26th 1923 and he passed away on August 9th 2004. He was a World War 2 rear gunner.  As happens many times through the year I find my thoughts filled with him (birthday, christmas and Rememberence Day), I would like to find out more about him and his life.

I am told that we originate from Ireland but know little else about our family history. I have also been told that my grandfather was married three times and outlived two of his wives. I know nothing of the first wife and very little about the remaining two. The second wife, who is my paturnial grandmother is Joyce Jefferies. She passed away before I was born but gave birth to seven children Christine Curran Barrett Tripp (deceased), Phillis Curran, Nancy Curran, Kathleen Curran Kruger Anderson, Lorie Jean Curran Bye, Sandra Ann Curran Kirby (my mother) and John Curran Jr. Not necessarily in that order. His third wife is Olive Noreen Bye Curran. She is the mother of six children ( I believe).  Anyway, any information that you have that may pertain to my family would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Looking for info about grandmother

Family Tree

My grandmother's name was Agnes Curran (her friends called her "Honey.")  She lived in Northern NJ, and she was married to Frank Schlogl.  They had 3 children:  Bernard, Elizabeth, and Frank; they divorced and I believe she eventually moved back to Ireland.  Does anyone know her, have any info, etc.  My father had little, if any, contact after his parents divorced, and we'd like to learn more about her and our Curran relatives.

New to Curran site

Family Tree

Good morning,

I am currently in California and with my very old grandmother....I have been working on gathering history from her for a few years now and was quite pleased to find this site! I am not tech savvy and so this is not something I am familiar with however I would very much like to learn about our family tree and contribute and possibly help to fill in some blanks.

Most of the Currans in our family are in California, one in Portland, myself in Vermont and we even have two of us overseas!

My email is and my name is Michele process of dropping my married name, Wells, and returning to just Curran.

I am 42yrs old and the daughter of Thomas James Curran, age 62 and resides in Costa Mesa, California. He was born in Brooklyn New York...

Before I say anymore, I am hoping that I can connect with someone here that I can just 'talk' too and get to know......I am not sure how to even post a pic but I am going to try.

I look forward to hearing from someone soon.

Thank you,

Michele Curran

Did you know that Eugene Curran Kelly was born on August 23, 1912 in Pittsburgh, PA, the third of five children. Yes, that Gene Kelly.

Ó Corráin, Corran, Curren, Currans, Currane, Curreen, Kirrane, O’ Corrin, O’Currane, O’Corren, Corrin

The Curran name, and its variations, are popular throughout Ireland, most particularly in county Donegal in the northern province of Ulster. The name comes from the Gaelic word “corradh” meaning ‘spear’. One of the most famous Irish Currans was John Philpot Curran, a barrister and a nationalist, whose daughter was engaged to Robert Emmett.

From Kenneth: The surname Curran appears to be patronymical in origin, and is believed to be associated with the Irish, meaning,"Grandson of Corran", a diminitive of "Coiradh (spear). Different spellings of the same name original surname are a common occurrence. Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spelling variations of Curran to be Corran, Currane, Kirrane, Curreen, O'Currin, Curren, and Coiradh. Although bearers of the old and distinguished Curran name comprise a small fraction of the population, there are a number who have established for it a significant place in history.

They include: Simon Curran(O'Currin) (d.1302), Bishop of Kiljenora,Ireland.

Charles Courtney Curran (1861-1942) American painter of "perfume of the Rose", still hanging in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., "The Breezy Day"' in Philadelphia, and "Mountain Laurel."

John Philpot Curran (1750-1817) Irish orator and Judge who was a member of the Irish Parliament in 1783.

John Joseph Curran (1859-1936) ordained a priest in 1887, he spent the rest of his life as Curate and Pastor in the coal-mining area of Pennsylvania. He became famous for his support of miners and thier unions.

Amelia Curran(d.1847) She practiced painting only as an amateur, and her portrait of Percy Bysshe Shelly was exhibited in the National Portrait Exhibition in 1868.

Pearl Gildessleeve Curran (1875-1941) American composer who published about forty songs, many of them to her own texts. Her most successful works include," Dawn". "Life", "Rain", "Nursery Rhymes", and "Nocturne."
