My grandmother was Helen Curran in New York. She was born around 1918. I know very little, she died when I was very young and my dad seems to know nothing of our family history. I don't even know her parent's names, but I think they may have been born in Ireland.

PATRICK CURRAN (b1840 Ireland)

(Parents Daniel O’Donnell (labourer and Grace Gallaher),
Children = DANIEL (b1874) + BERNARD (b1862), MARY (b1864), JAMES (b1869), ELIZABETH (b1877) and JOHN (b1880). Patrick migrated to Australia, arriving in Sydney aboard the Caribou on 4 October 1859. He was 19 and single when he migrated; his occupation was listed as labourer. He departed from County Donegal to Australia, assisted by the Donegal Relief Fund. This fund assisted people to migrate, no doubt useful considering the continuing hardships resulting from Irish Potato Famine, 1845 – 1847. Patrick Curran died in Brisbane Hospital on 20 July 1926 and was buried in Toowong Cemetery (Portion 15, Section 12, Grave No. 42) on the following day. On the Death Certificate it states that he was 86 years of age and that would mean he was born in 1840 and he was 19 when he arrived in N.S.W. His cause of death was listed as a fractured femur, uraemia and cardiac failure.

DANIEL CURRAN (b 9.7.1874 Maitland NSW) married GERTRUDE ALLEN
Children = BERNARD RALPH, GEORGE, DANIEL, JOSEPHINE, and VALERIE (adopted). Valerie was the daughter of Grace Veronica Nott, nee French, a half sister of Gertrude, who tragically died when Val was just 3 weeks old. Her father was Jim Nott. She married twice, surviving two husbands, Colin Bentley Wright, and some years later after his death, William Edward Johnstone. Daniel died of stomach cancer, possibly linked to the ‘bully beef’ that was often consumed in large amounts in that era.
