Hi!, my name Jennifer Curran from Dublin in Ireland. My 8-year old nephew has asked me to find out if the Curran name has any link with the Vikings? Anyone know??? Thanks.
Hi Jennifer - I don't think any of us Currans can definitively confirm a Viking connection, per se, but it stands to reason that with the history of invasions Ireland suffered, most folks of Irish descent probably have some Viking in them at some point. I *can* tell you this: My father John Curran was born in Portland, Maine, USA in 1922, passed away in 2004. Both of his parents were born on American soil, both had families that came directly from Ireland in the early 1800's. Dad knew himself and all of his relatives to be nothing but 100% Irish. In his old age he had to go for cataract surgery and during the course of pre-surgery exams and testing it was revealed by his eye doctor that unbeknownst to him and undetectable until recent medical advances and research, Dad had some type of anamoly in his eye, some type of tiny hole or defect somewhere that is a genetic condition that can ONLY be traced back to people who inhabit some remote region of northern Germany. So....there you have it: Somewhere, back in the eons of time, someone from Germany mixed things up with someone in my Dad's family, and I believe (although I'm not 100% sure about this and could very well be wrong) that Dad was told the connection got passed down through the father's side. There isn't any record anywhere of anyone in my family ever marrying anyone from Germany at any point, so we have to surmise this odd, almost inconsequential eye defect was passed on to him from some Invader way back in history. Interesting huh?
